SUMMERVILLE — Police have charged a Summerville woman in the death of a three-year-old girl in her care. Erica Mae Butts, 23, is charged with homicide by child abuse. Authorities responded to 207 Congaree River Dr. in the Lakes of Summerville subdivision about 7 p.m. Tuesday. The toddler was unresponsive and taken to the Summerville Medical Center where she later died, Summerville Police Capt. Jon Rogers said. Rogers said they upgraded the charge from felony child abuse after an autopsy Wednesday. The girl is not related to Butts and is from out of state, Rogers said.
