LADSON -- Stephanie Ackerman of Goose Creek walked around the Coastal Carolina Fair on Sunday afternoon wearing a snappy straw hat she bought from Leon's Leather, one of the vendors hoping to sell enough merchandise to pay for gasoline to get back to Florida. It cost her $25, and she thinks she got a good deal. "This fair only comes once a year," she said. "Let's have fun." Her husband, Tim Ackerman, paid for it. A warehouse worker, he said he's concerned about the economy like everybody else, but that wasn't holding him back Sunday. "I say let it rip," he said. Leon, who says he doesn't use a last name on the road, said sales are about the same as last year. "This is what you call a gas-money town," he said. Stopping in Charleston helps pay for the gas on the way back to Florida, where many of the vendors are based, he said.
