Simmons' seven touchdowns power Burke

Del'Javon Simmons stood out on the football field Friday night, and it wasn't because he wore pink socks. Burke's talented quarterback had an effort that bordered on surreal as the Bulldogs pounded Wade Hampton, 60-20, in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. The 5-10 senior carried 10 times for 157 yards and a touchdown, and completed 8 of 12 passes for 276 yards and six touchdowns. Simmons, who wore the pink socks to increase awareness in breast cancer, would have thrown for nine touchdown passes, but Sidney Sanders suffered from slippery hands. He was wide open when he dropped two long passes that would have been sure touchdowns, and caught another pass for 54 yards that he fumbled into the end zone for a touchback. "I told Sidney to take his gloves off," Simmons said with a laugh. "But he said that wasn't the problem. It was just one of those things.
